本期Science杂志封面是在“新视野”号宇宙飞船看到的冥王星的表面,左边白色明亮的斯帕尼克平原,液氮冰平面,它的许多表面凹凸不平的坑可能是由氮气升华形成的。右边的是暗红色的Krun Macula高地,对于平原有2.5KM的海拔高度。多个远距勘测相机从多光谱成像仪结合颜色数据合成图像制作出了这个图片。


The atmosphere of Pluto as observed by New Horizons


Observations made during the New Horizons flyby provide a detailed snapshot of the current state of Pluto’s atmosphere. wheras the lower atmosphere (at altitudes of less than 200 kilometers) is consistent with ground-based stellar occultations, the upper atmosphere is much colder and more compact than indicated by pre-encounter models. Molecular nitrogen (N2) dominates the atmosphere (at altitudes of less than 1800 kilometers or so), wheras methane (CH4), acetylene (C2H2), ethylene (C2H4), and ethane (C2H6) are abundant minor species and likely feed the production of an extensive haze that encompasses Pluto. The cold upper atmosphere shuts off the anticipated enhanced-Jeans, hydrodynamic-like escape of Pluto’s atmosphere to space. It is unclear whether the current state of Pluto’s atmosphere is representative of its average state—over seasonal or geologic time scales.
